Mysql no levanta

Hola, queria ver si alguien me ayuda, tengo el siguiente problema, instalo un 
mysql en un debian sarge sin problemas, pero cuando se levanta me da el sig 
error:
kunstman:/etc/init.d# ./mysql start
Starting MySQL database server: mysqld...failed.
        Please take a look at /var/log/mysql/mysql.err
(Notese el nombre del pc ;)
y mysql.err tiene:
040601 00:34:31  Error at /etc/init.d/mysql\n/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to 
server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket 
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: 
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!

y no se que mas hacer, en /etc/mysql/my.cnf tengo uno q viene por defecto 
en /usr/share/doc/mysql-server/my-small.cnf. So nomas, porfa ayuda....

P.D.: Para los q me digan que el problema es mysql ahorrense el comentario. :D
