configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

hola a todos,
tengo problemas para compilar, pues estoy intentando instalar el
squid-3.0-PRE3 en un CentOS 4.2 y cuando le doy ./configure y lo demas me da
este error

[root en ns squid-3.0-PRE3]#
 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/squid --enable-arp-acl
                                        make all
                                        make install

acabo de instalarle los paquetes del gcc pues tambien me daba ese error.
esto es lo que me arroja el gcc -v

[root en ns squid-3.0-PRE3]# gcc -v
Leyendo especificaciones de /usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.4/specs
Configurado con:
../configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info
 --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --disable-checking --with-system-zli
b --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-libunwind-exceptions --enable-java-awt=gtk
 --host=i386-redhat-linux
Modelo de hilos: posix
gcc versión 3.4.4 20050721 (Red Hat 3.4.4-2)


no se que pueda ser esto ...alguien me puede ayudarme ?
