Ayuda con Postgresql

Estimados, instale Postgresql para probrar una aplicacion de monitoreo, pero
cuando se inicia Postgres aparece el siguiente mensaje

root en gandalf:~# /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start
 * Starting PostgreSQL 8.3 database server

   ...fail!
Alguien me puede dar una ayuda con este error, pues he buscado en Internet y
aparecen varios reportes, pero ninguno me deja claro a que se debe el
problema, he seguido la configuracion de algunos foros, pero aún no resuelvo
el problema.
