Addressing the Challenges of Education in a Technological World:
How Learning Science is Leading the Way
    
Technology has long been seen as a panacea for education. Dating back to the invention of the most basic of technologies – books – we as a society have long been striving for technological ways to better and more efficiently educate our students.  Educational software is the most recent technology to be seen as the cure-all, as witnessed by dramatic increases in funding to develop and deploy such technology.  However, to truly address the critical needs of education – increasing class sizes, overwhelmed teachers, and students arriving at class with different learning styles and different levels of prior knowledge – the challenge is to create adaptive, intelligent educational software that really works. In this talk, Dr. McLaren will discuss how Learning Science has emerged as a research field to provide ideas for how to develop adaptive learning technology and provide evidence of its benefits. He will illustrate recent advances in adaptive educational software, specifically in the areas of intelligent tutoring systems for individual students, collaborative learning systems for groups of students, and educational games.  He will conclude with an overall assessment of where we stand today with adaptive learning software, as well as conjectures on where we should and will go next.


Mini-Bio:

Dr. Bruce M. McLaren is an associate research professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. His research and interests are in the Learning Sciences, particularly in educational technology, collaborative learning, intelligent tutoring systems, and educational games. Dr. McLaren has won more than 10 grants as a PI or Co-PI on these research topics from prestigious U.S. and European funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the European Commission, and the German Research Foundation. He has over 150 publications (31 journal articles) in academic journals and conferences and is recognized as a top-10 author in computers and education, according to Google Scholar. Dr. McLaren has a Ph.D. in Intelligent Systems, an M.S. in Intelligent Systems, an M.S. in Computer Science, all from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.S. in Computer Science from Millersville University of Pennsylvania.
